What: Attendees will learn to teach others about soil health, its importance and diagnosis, along with practices to improve soil health. Soil pit observations and other soil health demonstrations will be taught. 

Pre-requisite: Completion of Basics of Soil Health or undergraduate soils course.

When: September 1-3 (tentative)

Target Audience: Indiana Conservation Partnership staff, including those seeking Conservation Planner Certifications, along with farmer-mentors, agronomists, and other ag professionals.

Preregistration is Open - We will contact all pre-registrants when date and location is finalized to confirm their attendance.

 

IN THIS 3-DAY COURSE, STUDENTS WILL LEARN TO:

  • Develop an understanding of soil health and how soil functions and its impact on resource management.
  • Link soil biology back to soil health systems.
  • Use soil health principles to plan regenerative soil health management systems.
  • Develop nutrient management strategies to enhance ecosystem processes.
  • Conduct in-field soil health assessments and soil health demonstrations.
  • Use farmer inputs (goals) and background data to assess soil resources and implement a soil health system.
  • Recognize cover crop benefits, impacts, and management considerations.
  • Incorporate grazing systems and manures to improve soil health.
  • Develop an understanding of the economic benefits and costs associated with implementing a soil health system to reduce risk and build resiliency,
  • Understand and develop strategies to overcome barriers to change.
